She was an attorney with zero fashion business experience who couldn't find a hijab worth wearing. So she built one of the most recognized modest fashion brands in the world. When she looked at what was available for Muslim women in the market, the landscape was scarce. A few brands existed, but nothing that represented the community with the level of intentionality, professionalism, and quality she felt Muslim women deserved. The frustration was personal. Growing up, Melanie was already navigating the intersection of fashion and faith, making trips to vintage stores in high school just so her outfits wouldn't suffer because of the hijab options available to her. The hijabs she could find were poor quality, imported, and simply not good enough. And she knew that if she had this problem, scores of Muslim women had it too. But starting a business was not her plan. She is an attorney by profession and admits she had to be pushed into it because it sat well outside her comfort zone. What carried her through was something that had always been there: a genuine passion for fashion and a deep conviction that the hijab deserves to complete a look, not detract from it.
