The recovery of bluefin tuna stocks in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are a true conservation success story. As the popularity of sushi exploded around the 1970’s, bluefin tuna were in high demand, with individual fish valued as much as $3 million each! By 2006, the global bluefin tuna fishery was on the verge of collapse. In response, the international coalitions that manage bluefin tuna (ICCAT in the Atlantic, IATTC in the Indo-Pacific) instituted strategic recovery plans, including significantly reduced quotas, limited seasons, and greater minimum sizes. Recent stock assessments show that Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna are no longer overfished and the fish have returned to regions where they had essentially disappeared for decades. Bluefin tuna are another example of how resilient our oceans can be with proper, scientifically-based management actions.
