Spain’s groundbreaking new law bans ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and processed snacks from schools, mandating fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fish instead. It also requires vegetarian and vegan options and limits precooked and deep-fried foods. As I share in Food Fix, we can’t rely solely on personal responsibility in a food system designed to undermine health. We need systemic solutions that make the healthy choice the easy choice, and Spain just showed us how powerful that can be. Here’s what stands out: - Daily fresh fruit and vegetables, with nearly half being seasonal - Fish and whole grains required weekly - Soft drinks and junk food banned from vending machines - Five nutritious meals per week for all students, regardless of income - Vegetarian and vegan options to meet diverse dietary needs This is food policy as public health, and it’s a model the rest of the world should pay attention to. It’s time to fix our food system from the ground up—for the sake of our children and the health of future generations.
