Desmond Doss should never have fit the mold of a soldier. He refused to carry a weapon. He refused to take a life. Many of the men around him thought he didn't belong in the Army at all. But Desmond wasn't there to take lives. He was there to save them. As a combat medic in World War II, Doss entered some of the most dangerous battles in the Pacific without a rifle in his hands. He believed deeply that service to his country and service to his faith could exist side by side. That belief made him an outsider. Some even tried to have him removed from the military. Still, he showed up for the men beside him. During the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, American troops had climbed a steep escarpment under intense enemy fire. The battlefield became chaos. Mortars exploded. Machine guns raked the ridge. Dozens of wounded Americans were left behind. Most of the surviving soldiers were forced to retreat. Desmond Doss stayed. Not because anyone ordered him to. Because he couldn't leave those men behind. Alone on the ridge, with enemy fire falling around him, Doss began searching for the wounded. One man at a time, one trip at a time. He carried injured soldiers to the edge of the cliff. Then lowered them down to safety. Again. And again. And again. By the end, approximately 75 wounded soldiers had been brought to safety because one medic refused to quit. He never fired a shot but his courage earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the first conscientious objector to receive the nation's highest military award. Our nation's service members make choices like that every day. Their families make sacrifices alongside them. The uniforms may belong to one person. But the service belongs to an entire family. That is why we remember. Because freedom has always depended on ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things. People like Desmond Doss. People who chose service over comfort.
