After nearly four years my first book ‘Overshadowed’ is here. The nearly 300 page coffee table book showcases much of the forgotten history of the United States Marine Corps in Europe, the Caribbean, and South America during World War II. Many of the photos contained within have not been seen in decades and it was a learning curve to learn and see how to preserve these artifacts. This started several years ago when I saw my US Army friends poking fun at Marines for not being at D-Day. After the pain of that wore off I really thought about it, how come there were no Marines at D-Day or in Europe? Where the heck were we? We’re supposed to be the experts in amphibious warfare. My research found that not only did we have hundreds of Marines at D-Day, they also helped plan it, and the landing craft used to take the Allies to the beach was the brain child of a Marine. I found thousands of Marines who had been forgotten about during the war. Their exploits largely overshadowed by bigger units and great battles. A Marine regiment was in Northern Ireland, Marines made landings off the coast of France and in North Africa, dozens went through the Royal Air Force (RAF) night time fighter training and would go on to establish the USMC night time fighter squadrons in the Pacific. Through it all I found that the Marine Corps of the late 1930s and 40s is the same organization of today: a tough fighting entity that carries out world wide deployments and is always pursuing excellence in the profession of arms. It is always ready and willing to engage the enemy by matching up the most demanding missions with those most willing to engage and defeat any adversary. I sincerely hope everyone who grabs a copy enjoys the book. It was a labor of love to get this over the finish line. Thank you to everyone at Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and Osprey Publishing Ltd for taking a gamble on me with my first book. Thank you to all who supported me during it, especially my wife Kelley.
