There are more than a thousand species of sage, and 19 are native to California. Earlier this year, we planted a new hillside garden devoted entirely to them. As the days get warmer, the Sage Garden becomes almost impossibly aromatic. The leaves release volatile terpenes in the heat, sending all that green, resinous scent into the air. Sage is not just my favorite scent, but my favorite attitude. Cliché or not, it feels like change to me — a clearing, a threshold, a way of moving on. Even its name, Salvia, means “to save.” That is how we arrived at our NEW Sage Rich Cream, a revised version of our Manuka Honey Rich Cream. We first made a small batch for the California & Sage Subscription Box, mostly as an experiment. The response was unusually emphatic. It became clear the cream should not end there. The formula is built around lanolin, shea butter, olive and sunflower oils, and concentrated sage.
