In Bari, history and legend meet. Time to tell something unknown. The city’s patron saint is St. Nicholas, known in the Netherlands as Sinterklaas. In 1087, sailors from Bari sailed to Myra (in present-day Turkey) and brought his remains back across the sea to their city. Some say it was an act of devotion. Others call it a theft. Today, St. Nicholas rests in his own mausoleum inside the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, where people from all over the world still come to pay respect.
