The name of God in Hebrew is YHWH—four letters: Yod, He, Vav, He. Ancient Jews considered it too holy to speak aloud. But in the original Hebrew, these letters aren't spoken clearly... they're breathed. Yod sounds like a gentle inhale. He and Vav are breathy, open sounds. Together, YHWH mimics the sound of breathing-in and out. Some rabbis taught that God's name is spoken every time we take a breath. In Genesis, God breathed into man the breath of life. From that moment on, we've lived by His breath. Science agrees-without breath, the body dies in minutes. Every heartbeat and every thought depends on it. Even those who deny God still breathe His name all day long. Not knowing it. Not stopping. From the first cry to the last breath, we speak the name of the One who gave it.
