How can historical artefacts help us develop a more sustainable future? In our free display, @futureobservatory: Tools for Transition, @futureislandisland explores how the community of Rathlin Island, off the north coast of Northern Ireland, is working to secure its future and become carbon neutral by 2030. Home to around 150 residents, the island is a living case study in community-led climate action. As part of the display, experience Unlocking the Past by creative coder Rifke Sadleir (@rifke.world), a playful digital interactive that blends physical and digital experiences. Drawing on research from Future Island-Island it invites visitors to explore a section of the UK's coastline, focusing on Rathlin Island and its community and history. As you wander along a digital shoreline, you'll encounter objects discovered on the island – from a Neolithic axe head to a washed-up lighter – each acting as a portal to local histories and possible futures. Combining 3D mapping with stories gathered from local voices, the interactive brings Rathlin's living memories to life while revealing how understanding the past can help shape a more resilient future. Tools for Transition brings together four research projects from across the UK exploring how design can drive change in housing, healthcare, local planning and resource management.
