Costume designer Milena Canonero brought 1950s fashion back to life in Wes Anderson's Asteroid City ☄️ Set in 1955, the film follows a group of young stargazers who gather in a remote American desert town for a science convention. But when an alien unexpectedly arrives, the town is placed under government lockdown, forcing its residents to confront larger questions about life and existence. Reflecting Anderson's long-standing fascination with theatre and performance, Asteroid City is structured as a play within a television programme within a film, unfolding across three acts and an epilogue. Costume is central to creating the film's meticulously stylised world. Canonero designed every look, drawing on classic Hollywood for inspiration. The costumes worn by Scarlett Johansson as Midge Campbell, for example, reference the iconic wardrobes created for Grace Kelly and Kim Novak in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and Vertigo. Canonero is one of Anderson's most celebrated collaborators, having previously designed costumes for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
