#DesignOfTheWeek | All aboard the Pirelli bus 🚌 In 1962, tire company Pirelli commissioned designers Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes and Bob Gill to create a memorable advertising campaign for its range of footwear. Cut-out photographs of legs were placed along the side of a red double-decker bus, positioned beneath the upper-deck windows to create the illusion that passengers were wearing Pirelli slippers. Rather than simply using the bus as an advertising surface, the designers incorporated its existing architecture into the idea. As the bus moved through London, real passengers appeared to become part of the advertisement – turning an everyday journey into a visual gag. The campaign is a great example of the trio’s playful approach to graphic communication. Fletcher, Forbes and Gill went on to establish one of the most influential design practices of the 20th century, which later evolved into Pentagram. Image credit: © Raffaella Fletcher
