#ArchitectureFriday | Kingswood School by Eliel Saarinen is a masterclass in American Arts and Crafts design. Commissioned by Ellen Scripps Booth in the 1930s, the brief was clear: create a space that felt feminine, youthful and highly functional. Built during the Great Depression as an all-girls school, it’s thoughtful in every detail. A single asymmetrical building in limestone and decorative brickwork, the design draws on the residential principles of Frank Lloyd Wright - with single-loaded corridors that flood the interiors with natural light and frame views across campus. It was also a true family affair: Loja Saarinen designed the handwoven textiles, Pipsan Saarinen shaped the colour palette and interiors, and Eero Saarinen created more than 30 custom furniture pieces.
