Ok, with 6 kids, I’ve learned a few tricks through the years with making sure they are getting the very best nourishing diet…in one way or another! • Even in the form of deceit. 🤣🤣🤣 • I’ve definitely been known to slip in all the good stuff in my family’s food without them even knowing. • Well, by now, they’re on to me- but they don’t mind, because they can’t even taste what I’m adding in there, anyways, and they like the treats too, so they can’t complain. • You know, some liver in their smoothies, some bee pollen in their yogurt, some collagen sprinkled over their dinner….that’s how I roll. • And today, is another one of those tricks I’ve got up my sleeves, “gummy bears” that give my kids the chewy feeling of candy, but they are actually low in sugar and good for them! • And every time you see me making these for my kids in our stories- you all wanted the recipe! So let’s go! • I take elderberry syrup and turn them into gummies. I take kombucha and turn them into gummies. I take various fermented honey concoctions and turn them into gummies. I take the wild grape juice I make and…you guessed it…turn them into gummies. • I really have no limit to the gummies I’ll make for the kids, as long as they’re good for them! • And it’s amazing how the kids will pass on a glass of booch, but gobble up the kombucha gummy bears. • And that’s ok. I’m here for it! I can’t say that I blame them for wanting a cute little gummy bear or squiggly little worm, instead. • And it’s a win for all, because they get what they want-and I get what I want too. • Now, will the cooking process breakdown some of the medicinal benefits in the gummies, themselves? • Yes, surely. For us that raise sheep, you know that when we shear, we are left with almost 20 percent waste. • And then you’re left with the thought-what to do with all this fiber that can’t be spun?! • Did you know you can put wool in your garden to provide your plants with big doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, keep pests away, lock in moisture, and fertilize your plants all at the same time?! • Plants need Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium to grow. But they need Nitrogen the most • And if you’re helping your garden to grow using compost, you might be getting 1-2% Nitrogen. If you’re using poultry manure fertilizer you might be getting 4.5% Nitrogen. “With sheep’s wool, you’re getting between 9.3% – 14% Nitrogen. • Wool can also be used as mulch! • And a central complaint when using straw mulch is that it breaks down too quickly, allowing for weeds to grow and leaving the soil exposed, while wool mulch traditionally lasts a minimum of two years and keeps weeds at bay! • Wool also helps with slug control, because slugs don’t like to crawl over the wool! • And therefore plants have been healthier due to the wool, and that’s what actually keeps the Aphids away… because healthier plants are less susceptible to disease or pests! • Wool can also hold between 20-30x its own weight in water, and then release it slowly, it’s allowing these plants to continuously have access to water, without overwatering them! And these easy to find, nutritious “weeds” makes for a scrumptious meal! It’s the perfect way to celebrate the coming of Spring! • Ingredients: 3 Cups COMBINED henbit packed – flower tops and dandelion greens (the leaves) 5 Cloves Garlic 1/3 Cup Nuts pecans, walnuts, pines nuts...whatever you have on hand in your kitchen! 1 Tsp Italian Seasoning 2 1/2 Tbsp Lemon Juice 2-4 Pinches Sugar 3/4 cup Parmesan Cheese or #goatcheese or a cheese you make, yourself, at home! 1/2-1 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (personal preference on consistency) Yields approximately (I’m def an approximate girl 😂) one quart/12 servings. • Instructions: 1) Harvest your henbit by picking the flower & leaf tops off the plant. And picking only the dandelion leaves (not the flowers this time) 2) Rinse and dry the greens. 3) In a food processor, blend all ingredients except the olive oil. 4) After ingredients are combined, pour the olive oil in as a slow drizzle, until you’ve reached the desired consistency. • 5) And that’s it! I love repping Jesus. • What I don’t love are those pastel Christian clothes of past, adorned with mason jars, fireflies, country landscapes & lawn chairs, scrolling calligraphy, and over-used scripture. 🤣🫣 • (Not that you can necessarily overuse scripture…I’m just sayin…can I get something that doesn’t have “John 3:16” on it? 🤣🫣😂🫶) • And just like christian music has gotten better through the years (thank God, for real!) so has Christian fashion! 🫶🙌🙏 • Thanks to the up and coming youth for breathing life into the Christian music and clothing world! • The next generation is coming out with THE coolest street wear, alt-Christian fashions, clever depictions of scripture, unique art, and uplifting and empowering looks…not for the lukewarm Christian’s…and I want to shout some of them out for #farmfashionfriday • Go support these young artists if you can. • They are our future ✝️ • I’ll start with @youthoodarchive. In early spring, Henbit & Deadnettle are some of the first ‘weeds’ on the scene. • Neither plant is native to North America, and they likely arrived here in the pockets of early settlers, because both have important medicinal properties. • They are also often confused, and understandably so. • They both bloom in early spring and have similar characteristics since they are from the same family, the Mint family, (kissing cousins, if you will). • And even share some medicinal properties too! • Hopefully this little video of them side by side will help clear up any confusion. • Henbit has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries, and was used in the past to treat fevers and ease body aches. • Many people claim it has some energy boosting effects and may also help reduce anxiety. • Henbit is full of vitamins and minerals like iron and vitamins A, K and C, and all aerial parts are edible, so you can throw them in a salad or make a pesto from them, even! • That said, just because it’s in the mint family does not mean it’s got mint’s characteristic sweetness. Henbit is decidedly green in flavor. • Most biologists consider henbit a naturalized weed, at this point. • That said, it tends to grow in open field and lawns, so the lawn industry and big Ag do have a dog in that fight and consider it ‘invasive’. • Hmmmm. Wouldn’t it just make more sense to forage this lovely little ‘weed’ and use it for its medicinal benefits rather than pour more chemicals into our ecosystem? • Like Henbit, Deadnettle is also considered a weed, but it too has amazing medicinal properties. • It is anti-inflamatory, so you can put it on bugbites or stings to help ease pain. • Just grab a leaf, chew it up, and then pop it on the affected area. • It can also be used to stop bleeding. • In the past, Deadnettle was used as a diuretic and there are claims that it can help with kidney stones as well. • Some people tincture it and use it as a seasonal allergy remedy, because it also acts as an antihistimine. • I hope you have enjoyed learning about Henbit and Deadnettle, two “weeds” that certainly deserve some respect, and should certainly be spared from chemical eradication!

Though we run a traditional, regenerative farmstead-and believe in honoring and preserving tradition- we definitely take advantage of some of the modern amenities in our current society to make homesteading work in our favor a bit more easily. • I’m all about self care and grace and if there’s something that we can introduce into our set of homesteading systems that enhances, aides, or simply helps manage life more efficiently-we go for it! • This isn’t a competition on who has the “coolest” stuff or the most stuff. • This is about adding pieces to your homestead that benefit you, and your animals, the most. • Are red lights in the milk barn necessities? No. • That’s why we call them amenities. 💕 • Some can, and will, go without. • We could also go without. • And I should note that we HAVE gone without. 🥰 • What these modern amenities, like our red lights in the milk barn (and on my face 🤣) and milk machines HAVE done for us, is allow us to grow beyond what we were doing solely with our hands. • These amenities are coping mechanisms, helpers, relievers, and also even work horses, if you will. • For example, I was spending about 4 hours every morning hand milking, as some of you have witnessed through the years. • Hand milking is lovely. Especially when you have a few milking animals on your farm. • But if/when you grow that herd of milkers out- hand milking just doesn’t become tiresome, but the wear and tear on your hands grows exponentially- and- for me, most importantly, time is money and I just can’t/don’t want to spend half my day in the milking barn. • So the milk machine was introduced and it was really incredible. A real game changer and I welcome the help this little machine provides. • And the rlt was introduced to counteract the long hours spent in the barn. • It’s busy. It’s tiring. It’s dirty. It’s a LOT of work. • This time of year- the milk flows by the gallons and the time spent with the animals is endless. • So one day it came to me, as I was wrapping up a really long session in the milking barn, and longing for my red lights- couldn’t I do both at the same time?! • And my animals could benefit too?! • So, the biohacked milkbarn was born. 🤣

Cleavers help your body move lymphatic fluid. • But what exactly does that look like? • Your lymphatic system plays an integral role in your immunity and detoxification. Lymph, a usually clear fluid, flows through tiny vessels to various lymph nodes throughout your body where foreign material, microbes, and metabolic waste are processed and removed. • It’s a vascular system, like your cardiovascular system, but it doesn’t have a strong pumping organ like the heart to move it around. Instead, your body relies on movement and nearby blood vessels to keep your lymphatic fluid moving. • Sometimes, when you’re sick, you might feel your lymph nodes swell up. I usually notice this before coming down with a cold or flu virus. “Butter is delicious,” nutritionist Sally Fallon Morell — one of my favorite mentors, has said. • “It is the queen of fats, the healthiest fat in nature. We should be eating more of it!” Says Sally! • And I agree! • Want a USA butter history lesson?! • Keep reading!! • Since the first cattle arrived in Plymouth Rock, in 1624, the US has had an intense on-again, off-again love affair with butter, praised as virtuous and nutritious in some periods and decried as corrupt, unhealthy and even poisonous in others. • At butter’s peak, in the 1920s, the average American consumed 18 pounds — or about 72 sticks — of the stuff per year. • At its nadir, in 1992, it had dropped to 4 pounds. Americans had become so fat-phobic that they largely banished it from their refrigerators. As recently as 2006, margarine sales outpaced butter’s. • But new studies have shown that consuming butter — within reason — is not only not bad for you, but beneficial, full of vitamins and healthy fatty acids that help prevent tooth decay, cancer and even (gasp!) obesity. • With the advent of the cream-separating machine in 1878, butter production became big business. But with little regulation, bad, rancid butter at cheap prices soon proliferated in the market. • That’s when margarine stepped in. • Invented in 1869, when Napoleon III offered a cash prize to anyone who could create a cheap, plentiful butter substitute for poorer classes and the military, the substance — made with beef fat mixed with milk and salt — never took off in France. • But the prize-winner, chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès, was able to sell the patent in America to the US Dairy Company in 1871.
