Suspended and interwoven, each piece draws on generations of handed-down craftsmanship, brought together in a contemporary composition. Our new shop showcases our womenswear and home collections, and will be a home for craftsmanship, circularity and timeless design. New Makers 2025 · In Conversation Our New Makers programme is now in its seventh year. The successful artists receive a platform to sell their handmade goods, with full profits being returned to them, along with expert guidance on growing their emerging businesses. To celebrate London Craft Week, New Maker Lærke Møller Hansen is demonstrating her technique on the wheel at our London Shoreditch shop Friday 16 May, 12pm-5pm and Saturday 17 May, 1pm-6pm. Working from a former blacksmith’s workshop near Odense, Denmark, Lærke has been working in ceramics for over ten years. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese ceramics, she develops her own glazes using locally-sourced materials like sand and wood ash. She crafts serene, functional tableware guided by organic forms. Ahead of the event, we caught up with Lærke and our New Makers 2025 guest judge, the renowned ceramicist Florian Gadsby. Finding Life in a Lens · Giles Duley Photojournalist Giles Duley focuses less on conflict itself than “what happens around it” - how civilians navigate life against a backdrop of brutality: “I don’t document war, I document love,” he says, “You don’t see tanks, soldiers or planes in my pictures, you’ll find an old woman brushing her granddaughter’s hair, a mother feeding a baby, families cooking.” He has been spending long periods in Ukraine with the Legacy of War Foundation, the charity he founded to provide help to civilians living in conflict zones. Since a life-changing accident in 2011, when he stepped on a landmine while out with US troops in Afghanistan, Giles has been a triple amputee; he continues to visit and document how lives shape shift around war, advocating for people compromised by it. When he is at home in Hastings, he touches base with sea and sky, an uncomplicated horizon with “no sense of change – it’s a counterpoint to everything else I see,” he says. Here, in his raised ground floor apartment overlooking the English channel, there are clues of his interest in everyday civilian lives – mostly, food – on every shelf: towers of cookbooks, giant jars of pickled broccoli, morels and cucumbers made by Ukrainian babushkas, which he has hauled back in suitcases. Leveling and deeply emotive, food is, he says, “a lovely way to start a relationship”, and he always tries to cook or eat with people prior to taking their picture. New Makers 2025 · Meet the Makers We are delighted to introduce our New Makers for 2025: Sabine Van der Sande, Lærke Møller Hansen, Amy Leeworthy, Elise McLauchlan and Lindey Tydeman. For the seventh year, our successful artists receive a platform to sell their handmade goods, with full profits being returned to them, along with expert guidance on growing their emerging businesses. Sabine Van der Sande is a handweaver, using archival weaving patterns and a historic loom to create traditional folk textiles with a contemporary sensibility for space and colour. Lærke Møller Hansen is a ceramicist working at the intersection of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics to craft functional stoneware. Amy Leeworthy creates sculptural ceramics from her home studio on the Mornington Peninsula, Australia, inspired by the changing seascape of her natural surroundings. Woodworker Elise McLauchlan is based in Montreal, crafting hand-turned tableware from locally-sourced Canadian maple. Lindey Tydeman is a fine jeweller, using electroforming to craft layered pieces using a melange of precious metals, inspired by deep sea creatures. Breakfast With… Florence Knapp Before she wrote her debut novel, The Names, Florence Knapp was already well known as a heritage craftsperson. Twenty years ago, with young children at home, she began a sewing blog that focused on English paper piecing, a specialised type of hand-sewing that drew a devoted community of fellow makers. “I don’t like the label “introvert,” because I think we all contain multitudes, but I suppose I have quite introverted tendencies, and working with your hands can make it easier to be in a crowd. It creates a private space in your brain,” Florence says. But all the while, she was experimenting with fiction. In 2022, Florence spent six months working on the first draft of her debut novel, a story that tracks the fallout of domestic violence, and the ordinary decisions that can shape a life. “I feel a need to write. It has often been fiction, but it doesn’t have to be. Writing the blog, or having a Substack, or writing an Instagram post - those things also feel as though they serve the same need. Colour That Changes With the Light · Ceres Brixton-based natural dye studio Ceres, founded by Lara Mantell and Florence Hawkins, prints its signature geometric patterns using hand-cut paper stencils and screen mesh. Their pastes are made from foraged plants, byproducts and kitchen scraps, and ach panel is numbered, an archive of place and memory. To celebrate our Spring Summer 2025 concept, A Lightness of Being, Lara and Flo have made 200 unique panels by hand for our shop window display. The scale of the work is large - seven to fifteen pieces per location - and the mood is light, open, experimental.
