In 1994/95, the surf magazine were packed full of full color spreads from every surf brand under the sun. It was getting harder to get differentiation between companies. We decided to go to a full year of black and white ads as a way to break up the look and feel of the ad campaigns. This poster of Todd Chesser is still in the hands of his mom, Jeannie. RIP Todd - More to follow. #rustysurfboards #surfing #surfboards #surfhistory #toddchesser #rusty #1990s

Rusty History:Justin Poston 89-92’- one of the most electrifying surfers from the “pre-Momentum” era was Poston. He comes from a long line of gnarly San Diego Watermen and is the surfer Dane Reynolds used to draw inspiration from. His unique style and raw power had all the Rusty team of thatera taking notice. He was the future. Watch his parts in “No Thrills for the Cautious” and the first few Taylor Steele videos and you’ll see what we mean. His surfing from 30 years ago still holds up to todays standards. #rustysurfboards #surfing #surfhistory #sandiego #surfboards #surfer #justinposton

Volume: How important is it
Volume: How important is it? This is from a blog post Rusty wrote a few seasons ago but still hold up. It’s a hot take for all those who live and die by the Volume number in a board. Buckle up. “If you are a competitive surfer you probably couldn’t tell the difference in a half of a liter. That’s a half of a beer or a modest morning piss. A liter…yes. And that is on a short, low volume board that’s for a top level pro. “If you are not a top level competitive surfer, I would suggest being a little more flexible. For short boards the multiple of your weight in liters is between 33% and 35%. As the weight of the surfer goes up and the rider is reasonably fit the multiple creeps up. And as he/she gets older the multiple increases significantly.” THE EQUATION The equation for performance shortboards is fairly simple. Take your weight in pounds example; 160 Convert to kilos; divide by 2.2 equals 72.73 Multiply by .35 Equals 25.45 liters The multiple comes from thousands of shortboards for average to advanced surfers. As the ability level decreases, the multiple increases. With age, the multiple increases. I get quite a few surfers that obsess on .2 to .4 of a liter. They read it on the internet. Forget it. You won’t feel it. The charts and tables are guidelines, not gospel. The shaper has to find a balance between the two. You need to choose between volume and thickness; which number do you want your shaper to focus on. Once again, TRUST YOUR SHAPER.” Read more on the Rusty Masterclass Blog on the website. #rustysurfboards #sandiego #surfboards #customsurfboards #handmadesurfboards

FRIDAY SURF HISTORY: Kevin Connolly, Rusty and Taylor Knox on the podium at a BUD TOUR event at Lowers in 1994
FRIDAY SURF HISTORY: Kevin Connolly, Rusty and Taylor Knox on the podium at a BUD TOUR event at Lowers in 1994. It’s not everyday that two team riders both won their pro divisions. It won’t happen again ever it seems with how things are set up these days with Longboarding not included in pro events any longer. Back in the 90s, Pros had an option besides the ASP(WSL) world tour. The PSAA/Bud Tour events were held throughout North America, Hawaii and Puerto Rico and gave young pros a way to earn money and points that could help qualify for the ASP events; similar to todays championship tour(CT) and Qualifying Series (QS). Update on the people in this photo:Kevin Connolly is now in Arizona and works in the Landscape industry, Rusty is at the factory 7-days a week designing boards and Taylor is in top form and surfing up a storm riding for one-time Rusty shaper @chris_borst_designs. #rustysurfboards #prosurfing #surfboards #sandiego #customsurfboards

RUSTY SURF HISTORY: Rusty and Occy have a long and valued friendship
RUSTY SURF HISTORY: Rusty and Occy have a long and valued friendship. Both found each other at a time where they were on a trajectory to top of their craft. Occy was a brash young kid who rode his first Rusty to the World Junior title and into the OP Pro. Rusty was an ASP judge and shaping the finest blades under the Canyon label. The work they did together changed the tri-fin as well as everyone’s perception of what could be done with the fledgling design. The partnership was a true success for years until the clothing side of things muddled things up. Occy was branded with Billabong for clothing so when the Rusty management team wanted into the apparel market, it presented a tough discussion for surfers who loved riding Rusty’s boards. In Occys case, or so the rumor goes, and as you can see in the first photo, Billabong laid down the ultimatum: if they see an Rdot on his boards he would lose his sponsorship. Billabong was a power house brand and has always paid their athletes right, so for Occy, the choice was made. While he would go on to get Rusty’s boards from time, they were logoless and the partnership and sponsorship came to a close. While the end of an era, the friendship remains in tact as Rusty and Occy both know business is just business and both are still doing what they love. #rustysurfboards #occy #surboard #surfboards #surfhistory #surfing #surfer #surf (photos:Rusty Archives)

Zeke’s Surfboard Review: The Rusty SD Model in Dark Arts construction
Zeke’s Surfboard Review: The Rusty SD Model in Dark Arts construction. The “SD” or San Diego shortboard, is designed to be the ideal go-to shortboard for Southern California. The “SD” performs well in everything from the softer beachbreaks of Del Mar and Leucadia to the hollow reef breaks of La Jolla and Sunset Cliffs. Because of the versatility of the SD design it is the ideal one board quiver for any region. It’s tried in true from 2’-10’ We took the predictable performance of the “Yes, Thanks” model and dialed it in for smaller, softer surf by adding volume, a little width, and an increase in thickness. The rails of the SD are foiled with a low apex. A crowned deck helps maximize the volume in this fun shortboard. The bottom of the SD has a deep single concave that allows the board to generate speed through the flats. Ride the SD 2-4” shorter than your traditional shortboard due to the additional volume, and enjoy the results of this looser, faster precision shortboard! #rustysurfboards #surfboard #surfboards #darkartssurfboards #customsurfboards #sandiego #surfer ##surfboardreview
