In a landmark victory for the Cayman Islands, the majority voted "NO" to the proposed cruise berthing facility, thus protecting the amazing marine biodiversity of the area. George Town Hope Spot Champion Chloe Bentick-Lalli, stated, “I am deeply proud to have stood alongside so many passionate individuals in defense of Georgetown Harbour and Eden Rock. The success of the referendum is a powerful testament to what we can achieve when we come together, educate, and stand firm in our values. Mangroves are among the most productive and important coastal ecosystems on Earth. They act as natural buffers against storms, prevent coastal erosion, filter pollutants from water, and serve as nurseries for countless marine species, including many that are vital to fisheries and ocean health. These tangled forests provide shelter and breeding grounds for young fish, rays, and sharks, making them essential to sustaining life both above and below the waterline. In Panama, the mangroves near David in the province of Chiriquí are especially critical. At least 13 shark species and 7 ray species, including endangered and critically endangered species like the Pacific nurse shark (Ginglymostoma unami) and the Cerdale shark (Carcharhinus cerdale), depend on these mangroves to survive. Yet this habitat is now facing potential threar from the proposed construction of Puerto Barú, which would destroy a quarter of Panama’s mangrove cover through dredging and industrial development. Local fishers, ecotourism operators, and conservation groups are calling for the project to be reevaluated and relocated. Join us and the communities of Chiriquí in standing up for Panama’s mangroves, because protecting them means protecting biodiversity, livelihoods, and our shared future. Gyres are large systems of ocean currents that move in a circular pattern 🌊 There are 5 major gyre systems in the world, one being the Northern Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. This gyre is home to the Sargasso Sea - the only sea with no land boundaries! The Sea is bordered by the Gulf Stream to the west, the Canary Current to the east, the North Atlantic Current to the north, and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current to the south. The time to act is now. We must unite to safeguard the ocean – the planet's blue heart – currently heavily impacted from threats such as unsustainable development, pollution, and warming waters. The George Town Hope Spot in the Cayman Islands is a special place, scientifically recognized as important to ocean health by Mission Blue in 2019. The Hope Spot became official after a destructive port project was successfully halted, but now it faces a renewed threat. Happy World Penguin Day! 🐧 Although we often only think of penguins living in Antarctica, these seabirds can actually be found in various locations (and Hope Spots)!
