In Indonesia, landfills are both a necessity and a warning sign. They serve as critical collection points for the country’s waste, preventing trash from ending up directly in rivers and oceans. Without them, the problem would be even more visible — and even more damaging to the environment. But landfills also reveal the scale of the waste crisis: many are overflowing or operating far beyond their intended capacity. In some regions, these sites receive thousands of kilograms of waste every single day — mountains of plastic, food scraps, and mixed materials with no sustainable plan for processing or reducing them. Once full, landfills are often shut down, but the waste remains — often leaching into soil, releasing harmful gases that boost climate change, and pushing the problem to a new location. Instead of being a long-term solution, they are more like a pause button in a growing emergency.

Anzeige “The sea has always been the place where I feel most alive.” Nathalie Pohl is a renowned German open-water and extreme swimmer who has accomplished historic milestones in long-distance swimming. Starting her journey in the pool at the age of five, she transitioned to open water in 2014 – and has since pushed the limits of what’s possible. In September 2024, she became the first German woman to complete all seven “Oceans Seven” crossings, one of the toughest challenges in open-water swimming. But Nathalie’s impact goes beyond athletic achievement. She is a strong advocate for water safety and education, using her platform to inspire change. Just a few weeks ago, she joined Sea Shepherd Germany aboard the Triton, witnessing the threats facing our oceans firsthand. Sea Shepherd is actively restoring marine life, planting seagrass, protecting the fragile Baltic Sea ecosystem, and taking action where it’s needed most. When waste has nowhere to go — it ends up everywhere. Most plastic pollution in the oceans originates on land. That’s why our focus is on stopping waste before it ever reaches the sea. GOT BAG Indonesia collects plastic waste both in coastal waters and on land—through designated collection points in local communities. Residents can drop off their waste at these locations to prevent it from ending up in nature. Beach kiosks also participate by disposing of trash properly. Fishers bring back plastic caught in their nets, removing it from the ecosystem. Additionally our partner foundation GOT BAG Indonesia organizes clean-ups in mangrove forests—biodiverse coastal ecosystems where plastic often gets trapped.
