Whether they're soaring through the skies with their little ones or nurturing them in maternity colonies, bat moms are the unsung superheroes of the animal kingdom. Their unique and fascinating ways of raising their pups are a true testament to the power of motherhood! 🍈 Fruit Bat Moms: -Flight with Pups: Fruit bats, like Egyptian fruit bats or flying foxes, are known for carrying their babies during flight during the first few weeks of life. This is a unique trait among mammals since most species leave their young behind. Their ability to carry the pup while flying is crucial for their survival, as it allows them to forage and move between roosts while keeping their young safe. -Independence: After 4-6 months of nursing, pups start foraging on their own, though they stay close to their mothers, sometimes for life. 🦟 Insect Bat Moms: -Maternity Colonies: Insectivorous bats, like the little brown bat, primarily leave their young in maternity colonies while they go out hunting. These colonies provide safety in numbers. Mother's take turns foraging while other mother's stay behind to "look after" the babies. -Flying Soon: Pups begin flying much earlier than fruit bats, usually within 8 to 12 weeks. This rapid development is crucial for their survival as insect bats rely heavily on hunting for food. Just like all mammals, bat mothers form strong, protective bonds with their young, even grieving at the loss of their baby. Oh dear , someone clearly lied about completing Flight School. 😆 Don’t worry, this little guy is okay! Our bat castle has a soft floor for oopsies just like this, and staff was there to quickly scoop him up. It happens to the best of us, and the only thing that was hurt was his pride. Even though he was flying great when tested before his release, it’s back to school for this bat. Next time we hope he gets to see more sky and less ground. 🤣

¡Feliz Cinco De Mayo! Our Jamaican Fruit Bats a.k.a. Mexican Fruit Bats are celebrating Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla today! Did you know that Mexican Fruit Bats are the most common fruit bat found in Mexico? Their diet consists primarily of figs, as well as other fruits like avocados, mangoes, guava, papaya, and bananas. They rely on sight and smell to find their food. In the wild Mexican Fruit Bats typically only live 9 years, however here at Bat World, we’ve had rescues live as long as 30 years! José here, is one of our resident geriBATric Mexican fruit bats living out his golden years at the sanctuary. Our colony of Mexican Fruit Bats were rescued from research labs, the exotic pet trade, and zoos that had shut down. 🦇 AIRY 🦇 Employees at a by-appointment hair boutique noticed a bat flying around in their salon in Mineral Wells, TX, and called us for help. By the time staff arrived, the little Mexican free-tailed had hidden herself away in the black rafters of the room. With the salon not being open during set hours, being able to regularly check on the bat wasn’t possible, so staff hoped that the little bat would find her way out the way she came in. After not hearing from the the salon several days later, imagine our surprise when we received a call a week later that an employee had found a bat grounded in the salon and had put the bat into a box. We rushed to retrieve that bat, hoping it was a different bat and not the one that we’d attempted to rescue 6 days before. The state of dehydration confirmed our fears - this certainly was the same little bat, now too weak from hunger and dehydration to continue flight. After arriving back at the sanctuary, we first hydrated little Airy and gave her a few drops of blended amino acids. An initial exam showed Airy to be healthy and uninjured, although severely underweight. After a couple of weeks of good food and flight practice, we were thrilled to return Airy to the night skies.

Meet Batty! This little guy was rescued from Wichita Falls and brought to our sanctuary for care. After receiving a full check-up and some much-needed TLC, Batty is almost ready to spread his wings again! Soon, he'll be released back into the wild where he belongs. 🦇iTs 5 DoLlAr FrIdAy!!🦇 Meet **Armin**, the tiniest soldier to ever come out of an army base. This little bat was found dehydrated on a job site at the Mineral Wells base. Luckily, he was rescued just in time and is now safe, hydrated, and recieving the care he needs. Bats like Armin are vital to our ecosystem—they help control insect populations and pollinate plants!
