Floating Shelves or Upper Cabinets
Floating Shelves or Upper Cabinets? Ah, the million-dollar question when designing your kitchen or any space, really. I’ll be honest—I’m team open shelves. But here's the thing: if you're on the fence, why not do both? I won’t pretend I’m the cleanest person in the world (major con if you don’t want to spend an afternoon wiping down all your glassware), but open shelves bring a lot to the table. They create balance, offset the heaviness of base cabinets, and give you the chance to actually see and enjoy your favorite pieces. Plus, they make grabbing everyday items way easier. So yeah… pros and cons. What do you think—are you team open, closed, or somewhere in between? #warehouserenovation #woodwardthrowbacks #interiorfurniture #interiordesign #grandrapidsinteriordesign #blackinteriordesigner #madeindetroit #openshelves #designtalk #industrialhome

In every project we take on, there’s always a starting point—and in this one, I got lucky
In every project we take on, there’s always a starting point—and in this one, I got lucky. My clients already had a great sense of style and serious resourcefulness. Case in point: the ceiling made out of pallet wood. I remember walking in and seeing it for the first time and thinking, “Wait… this is actually dope—you have to finish this!” And I’m so glad they did. Incorporating wood, whether it’s on the ceiling or walls, is one of the easiest ways to add warmth, texture, and character to a space—and this project is full of it. We recently transformed an old general store in Grand Rapids into a truly unique home for our clients
We recently transformed an old general store in Grand Rapids into a truly unique home for our clients. This space is full of soul, texture, and history—exactly the kind of place I’d live in myself. The design blends industrial elements with mid-century flair and a touch of funk, creating a layered and lived-in feel that’s anything but ordinary. From mixing vintage pieces with modern finishes to adding warmth through rich textures and patinas, this home tells a story in every corner. I had a ton of fun bringing this vision to life, and I’m giving you an inside look at the full transformation in our latest YouTube video. Come along as we turn this unique structure into a home that’s personal, stylish, and filled with character. Do you believe in love at first sight
Do you believe in love at first sight? Well, I most definitely do. I remember the first time I laid eyes on this old theater marquee sign. We were at the estate sale of our now-good friend Jim, who had saved the sign himself. He told us how he had the exact same reaction to it over 20 years ago when he rescued it from the now-demolished Grand Rivier area — that immediate feeling of “Oh wow, this is something special.” I always tend to gravitate toward things with intense patina, and this sign definitely intrigued me. But what really caught my eye was the faded green dot painted in the center. As I mentioned in the video, this piece of art hasn't been verified as the work of the legendary artist Tyree Guyton — but I really hope it is. And even if it’s not, I’ll love it just the same. @tyreeguyton #mysteryonmack #warehouseconverstion #uncommonart #patina #metalsignart #woodwardthrowbacks

Art is so many things—and before all my fellow art lovers come for me, hear me out
Art is so many things—and before all my fellow art lovers come for me, hear me out! In our home, art isn’t limited to what hangs on the walls. It’s the glow of a well-placed sconce, the curve of a chair, the texture of a feature wall. One of my absolute favorite pieces? Our recycled glass sconces. They're simple in form but stunning in impact—functional art that adds soul to the space. At night, when I flip the switch, the soft glow transforms the whole room. The ambiance is warm, calming, and just a little bit magical. It’s moments like that—where design meets feeling—that remind me: art is everywhere. ✨ #MysteryOnMack #warehouserenovation #adaptivereuse #art #arttalk #woodwardthrowbacks #hometour #designreveal

Fun Fact: We were completely obsessed with this warehouse long before we ever lived in it—and let’s be honest, we weren’t the only ones (sorry to our equally obsessed friends)
Fun Fact: We were completely obsessed with this warehouse long before we ever lived in it—and let’s be honest, we weren’t the only ones (sorry to our equally obsessed friends). The name Mystery on Mack came from our ongoing fascination with this place that refused to be ignored—it caught our eye every single time we drove by. Someone was already living in it (cue the envy), but that just fueled the dream: “What if one day...?” Fast forward a few years, and somehow, we’re the ones calling it home. Sharing this journey with you has been surreal, and we’re beyond grateful to live in this magical space. Hopefully, it inspires you to take a chance on turning your own wild idea into reality.   Make sure to check out our YouTube channel to see the before and the ongoing process of designing and building this space!

A little bit of a surreal moment happening because our landscaping project is officially underway
A little bit of a surreal moment happening because our landscaping project is officially underway! Super grateful to have worked with @yardzen — an online landscape design service that helped pull all our ideas together into one cohesive plan. Now it’s up to us to actually execute the design… no pressure, right? 😅 But seriously, this summer is going to be a good one, especially since the yard is one of our favorite places to be. Also, a heads up — we’ll be documenting the entire process over on our YouTube and the first video drops...not exactly sure when but soon! HA stay tuned #MysteryOnMack #woodwardthrowbacks #detroithomes #landscapingproject #yardzen #landscapedesignideas What outdoor space are you most excited about?!?

Bulletproof Glass Isn’t Just for Liquor Stores

At least, that’s what we think
Bulletproof Glass Isn’t Just for Liquor Stores At least, that’s what we think. Over the past few years, we’ve been pushing our designer brains to transform both common and uncommon materials into furniture. Case in point: bulletproof glass — which, to be real, is really just thick acrylic. I’ve always loved the transparency of it, but I’m even more obsessed with the way it wears and tears after years of use in liquor stores. That weathered look has a story to tell. So, we decided to build a credenza for our home out of this material because I fell in love with the idea of making my favorite objects and plants (dead or alive) look like they’re floating. Our first prototype debuted when we launched the second installment of the Party Store collection. This is now our second time (and definitely not the last) designing and building with this material. We're already itching to see what else we can create with this pretty amazing stuff. What type of bulletproof furniture should we make next?

If you haven’t caught on yet—we’re all in on marble
If you haven’t caught on yet—we’re all in on marble. Yeah, we wondered for a second if we were doing too much in our #mysteryonmack project. But then this staircase moment happened… and we knew. It’s bold. It’s refined. It’s that quiet kind of luxury that speaks volumes. What could’ve been just another set of stairs is now a total vibe—elevated, sculptural, and surprisingly doable budget-wise. No overthinking, just good design instincts. And trust us—the marble moments coming to the courtyard and garden this summer? Next level. #MysteryOnMack

It’s the little moments that make a house feel like home
It’s the little moments that make a house feel like home. And who would’ve thought a former neighborhood grocery store could become something this magical? When I’m designing—whether it’s this space or any other—I always lean into texture and color. Yes, color can feel intimidating, but it’s when you find the courage to play—with warm, bright, dark, and moody palettes—that the real magic happens. ✨ Our Grand Rapids project reveal goes live on YouTube this weekend! I’m so excited to share the story behind every choice we made—and hopefully inspire you to add a little magic to your own space, too.

Today, on Earth Day, we pause to reflect on what this day truly means to us
Today, on Earth Day, we pause to reflect on what this day truly means to us. From the beginning, our mission has centered around reusing the materials that surround us. While sustainability has always been a core element, our deeper inspiration lies in honoring nature as the ultimate creative force. We’re in constant awe of her—her beauty, her power, and her inevitable ability to reclaim. The buildings we inhabit and the materials we use will one day be absorbed back into the earth, and there's a profound, humbling poetry in that. In the juxtaposition of decay and growth, especially visible in our city, we find endless inspiration. The beauty and the pain of transformation remind us of nature’s rhythm—and our role in it. Here’s to honoring the earth not just today, but every day. #earthday #woodwardthrowbacks #detroit

When we saw this vintage glove chair, The Joe Chair, at Round Top last year our heads were spinning
When we saw this vintage glove chair, The Joe Chair, at Round Top last year our heads were spinning. It was so interesting and unexpected that we kept being gravitated to it. We had no idea if it would work in our space and honestly no plans on how to get it back from Texas! But as the saying goes if you love it, buy it! Because when shopping for vintage you never know if you will find one again. And the ones that got away are always the ones you will remember most!
