Your Mother’s Day flowers are officially in full bloom here at the farm, and I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW RELIEVED WE ARE! 😅🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 It seems like such a basic thing, right? We’re a flower farm. OF COURSE we’ll be harvesting tulips at Mother’s Day…..right? Here’s the thing we haven’t talked much about: It’s been one of the toughest springs for outdoor growing that we’ve experienced in 11 years of farming. First, the winter was extremely cold. And hey, a cold Canadian winter is a good thing. We haven’t had one in a while, and that sense of normalcy felt good. But—as the calendar flipped over to spring, the weather didn’t seem to get the memo. It STAYED cold. The days were cold, the snow kept coming, and the nights continued to freeze. And then there was the rain. Countless grey and rainy days followed that cold weather, and, well, the flowers simply didn’t have any sunshine and warmth to work with, two things that they need to bloom. Before we knew it, we were 10 days behind where we typically are in the season. Normally these tulips would already be in blooms, and tucked safely into our cooler for storage, ready to use this weekend. This year, on Sunday, with just a week to go before the BIG DAY (Mother’s Day), we still had a field of green, without any blooms. BUT, a lot can happen in just a few days, and IT DID! 😅 After two days of warmer temperatures, yesterday the sun came out and the field popped into full bloom! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Suddenly it was a 5 alarm emergency to get things harvested in time, and we went from not having any tulips to working straight through our coffee break, and lunch hours to harvest as quickly as possible. The cooler is bursting at the seams with beautiful tulips now, and the big push is on to get these flowers processed so that they’ll be ready to put into bouquets over the next couple of days.
