WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR DAHLIA TUBER ORDER 👇🏻 We’ve just finished shipping all of our dahlia tuber orders across the country, and we have prepared all of our Dahlia tour orders for pick up. It truly is one of the most exciting times of the year, a time when you receive “happy mail“ in your mailbox! Just the thought of planting something beautiful in the garden gives us so much to look forward to, particularly after such a long cold winter. but, what exactly do you need to do when you receive your order? And what should you expect when you receive your order? 1️⃣ Open up your packages. The packages we prepare our Dahlia tubers in can act like little mini greenhouses if they are left sealed, and excess moisture that may build up, runs the risk of creating rot or mold. you want to open your packages, and examine your tubers. 2️⃣ Remember not to panic if you do not see an “eye” or sprout on your tuber. The rate at which tubers sprout is directly related to temperature. Here in southern Ontario we have had a long cold winter, and, just like many other things in the garden, signs of life might be running a little bit behind where they may normally be at this time of year. we store our Dahlia tubers in our basement, at 50° (10°C), and sometimes they haven’t quite had a chance to “wake up“ before we ship them out to you. Once the temperatures begin to warm up, your tubers will sense that it’s spring, and eyes will begin to sprout. At this time of year, they are just waking up from a long winters nap, and some are slower to wake up than others. We find that some varieties might sprout “eyes” quite quickly, where other varieties take between four and six weeks to sprout. Patience, as always, is a virtue in gardening. 3️⃣ Keep your pouches open for good air flow, and leave your dahlia tubers in a warm/room temperature room to allow them time to “eye up”. No need to put them in a sunny window or in direct light. They won’t need like to sprout, they’ll just need a warmer temperature. Make sure not to plant outside until the soil is at least 60 degrees, and signs of frost have passed. More on all of this soon!
