Meet Chloe Hurst! ⁠ By day, Chloe is the Director of Visual Communications at a marketing agency — but after hours, she’s the creative force behind a branding studio for gothic and alternative brands. When she’s not designing, you’ll find her restoring a gothic bungalow, treasure-hunting for antiques, or spending her evenings in the garden. ⁠ ⁠ A lifelong gardener inspired by peaceful moments with her mom and a love for gothic style, Chloe set out to create something different: The Goth Garden — a moody, dramatic space filled with the darkest plants she could find. Fresh to Families is a local organization that provides access to fresh, locally grown food 🥬 🍅 that may otherwise be inaccessible, while also giving participants the dignity to choose the foods that work best for them. Every dollar 💵 redeemed goes straight to BC farmers 🧑‍🌾 and produce vendors.⁠ ⁠ We are grateful that we were able to partner with them this year. ⁠ Thanks to all the local vendors and volunteers who came out to help make the day a huge success. Also known as the Mexican Sour Gherkin, Cucamelon seeds produce vines that could be mistaken for regular cucumber plants. 🥒⁠ ⁠ The plants are not quite as productive as cucumbers, but the fruits are amazingly cute and novel. ⁠ ⁠ They look like tiny watermelons, but have a very appealing cucumber flavour with slight citrus notes. Eat them fresh or pickle them for a crunchy treat.

This is a superior 💪 cabbage for summer or fall harvests 🥬 that works well for miniature heads if grown at 20cm (8") spacing.⁠ ⁠ It's the earliest maturing red hybrid cabbage that we're aware of, with full-size heads weighing 1.3-1.8kg (3-4 lbs). Although the tight, interior leaves are thick, they are sweet and crisp and never fibrous.

In most places, your soil is typically around pH 7 🧪. However, some plants like blueberries 🫐 or camellias 🌸 prefer acidic soil. ⁠ ⁠ Some plants like hydrangeas can completely change colour 🎨 depending on soil acidity.⁠ ⁠ Knowing the science 🧬 of our soil is a powerful tool when we're planning our gardens. We recommend sending in soil samples to get them tested in a lab (the information you receive is truly priceless), but if you want a quick sample of what your soil is like, these at-home pH testers are great!⁠ -⁠ -⁠ -⁠ #soiltest #soilPH #organicgardening #permaculture
