Four Spring Dahlia Tasks That Will Reap Rewards Later

Four Spring Dahlia Tasks That Will Reap Rewards Later 🌱Labeling We label all of our dahlias so we don’t have any guessing to do when it comes time to harvest the tubers in the fall. We use an industrial permanent marker on wooden paint sticks stuck in the ground for labeling. It’s not fancy, but it’s economical and it works well! We also make a field map, which helps us to keep well organized and also serves as a back-up to our labeling system. 🌱Pinching We pinch our dahlias when plants are about 8”-12” tall. Pinching dahlias redirects their energy from one big, thick central stem to multiple side-shoots. This will encourage your plant to produce multiple blooms all throughout the growing season. Quickly after pinching your dahlias, you’ll notice two new shoots will grow where only one was before! 🌱Staking or Corralling We plant dahlias in a double row, 12” apart in both directions. Soon after planting we pound t-posts every 25-ft down the row. When dahlias are about 12” high we make a “belt” of twine and corral the dahlias with it. As they grow, we add layers of twine as needed. We grow thousands of dahlias, so you may want to add individual stakes when you plant your dahlias to offer them some support as they grow. 👉If you don’t want to stake your dahlias, a dual approach will help keep them upright: •Plant them deeply so that a good portion of the stem is underground to support the plant above. •Pinch them hard and keep the blooms cut deeply so that your plants are stockier and sturdier. As a bonus, the more flowers you harvest, the more your plants will produce! 🌱Mulching Did you know that mulching doesn’t mean just using wood chips? When we started flower farming in 2012, we thought that mulch was another term for the wood chips that many people put in their landscaping beds. But actually, mulch is a term for any ground cover that covers your bare soil, including biodegradable plastic mulch, wood shavings/chips, ground cloth, lawn clippings, leaves, etc. Mulching around your dahlias keeps your dahlias’ “feet” cool, can prevent both irrigation evaporation and sudden rain shower puddling at the base of your plants, and suppresses weeds.

Can you plant dahlias that have already sprouted in storage
Can you plant dahlias that have already sprouted in storage? 🥔🌱 Yes! Many of our tubers are already growing sprouts by the time we get them planted out in our fields. If your dahlia has sprouted in storage, there are two options: 1. You can leave the sprouts on, but plant the tuber deeper to give the sprout more support from the earth around it. (This is similar to the method of planting tomatoes deeply. The stems of dahlias, like the stems of tomatoes, will also grow more roots when underground! This anchors and feeds your dahlias even more.) 2. You could also snap off the sprout and plant the tuber without it. Don’t be alarmed if two eyes (or more!) appear where a sprout is broken off, as this is common when sprouts are removed. (Sometimes new growers are afraid the the multiple eyes/sprouts that follow a broken sprout are a sign of leafy gall, but they are usually just the sign of a healthy, vigorous tuber that wants to grow!) #triplewrenfarms #sharebeauty #growingdahlias #dahlias #dahlia

Look closely👀—can you see the tiny golden points at the tip of each petal
Look closely👀—can you see the tiny golden points at the tip of each petal? ✨ These are two of our favorite golden-tipped dahlias! Bloomquist Essence and Skipley Spot of Gold are so fascinating to see side-by-side. BLQ Essence is somewhat shorter than Skipley Spot of Gold, but the blooms are very similar in size and in their unique golden petal tips. BLQ Essence however is a much icier pink color, so its tips look almost fluorescent, while Skipley Spot of Gold is a more intense purple, and its tips look in contrast more golden. Both dahlias are very productive, and keep throwing fantastic, strong stems when harvested regularly. 👉These are both available right now in our U.S. online shop for shipping this week. Don’t delay, though! Sale ends tonight at 11:59pmPT! #triplewrenfarms #sharebeauty #dahliatubersale #dahlias #dahlia #growingdahlias

We make sure to tackle tasks in spring that will make life easier in the fall. 🌱🍁 Spring pinching, mulching, labeling, and staking all contribute in big ways to us finishing the season well! These gorgeous white and pale purple dahlias are two varieties I feel we couldn’t live without here at the farm
These gorgeous white and pale purple dahlias are two varieties I feel we couldn’t live without here at the farm. 💜🤍 We started growing Shiloh Noelle in 2018, and Bloomquist Compare in 2021. These dahlias are both so romantic, reliable, and vigorous. I’ve included both in flower walls, wedding work, and every dahlia application that demands the best, most lovely, fluffy, pastel beauties. In my opinion, Bloomquist Compare would just barely win a competition between these two, simply because it is a more manageable size and has better tuber production, but dinner plate-sized Shiloh Noelle is so incredibly sweet and pillowy that it makes the cut to keep in our collection year after year. Both these dahlias have very strong stems, and a strongly similar color palette, but Shiloh Noelle is slightly shorter and has about twice the flower-size of Bloomquist Compare. Shiloh Noelle is a giant informal decorative dahlia, with petals that twist and twirl in such a winsome way, and Bloomquist Compare has more tidy (but still a tiny bit wild!) formal decorative-form blooms. 👉Both of these wonderful dahlias are currently available in our U.S. online shop, but only for a couple more days! Our Spring Tuber Sale ends on Friday, May 2nd. If you’d like to grow one or both of these in your flower garden this summer, head over to our online shop now. Ice Cube and Café au lait dahlias are polarizing
Ice Cube and Café au lait dahlias are polarizing. Most gardeners either ❤️ love them or ❌ hate them! Somewhat similar in size, form, and color, they *can* be very different in height and vigor because of one of their shade preferences... Ooooh this is going to be a juicy comparison, so let’s get right into it and look at the similarities and differences between these two beautiful dahlia varieties. Both Ice Cube and Café au lait make informal decorative-form blooms that are enormous. Both varieties make big initial blooms but also hold their size well throughout the season if given plenty of good nutrition and hydration. With a hard pinching at 12” tall, both top out for us at 40”-48” (although in hotter summers it is very tall for us!), but Ice Cube - and this is a *very important* note: Ice Cube only gets tall for us if given lots of afternoon shade. Without it, Ice Cube easily stunts to 24”-30”, which would be a shame to let happen considering how glorious it is when it reaches its full potential! Without shade, it doesn’t produce as many tubers either, but with that accommodation it makes the same long, strong stems as Café au lait, and has very similar, bountiful bloom and tuber production. Café au lait is known for for its blushy, tawny color that can have more pink when days are long and be more cream when they’re short. Ice cube is also more raspberry midsummer and creamier in fall (when these videos were taken). 👉Both of these dahlias are currently available in our U.S. online shop, but don’t delay because our Spring Dahlia Tuber Sale ends this Friday, May 2nd.⏰ 🤔What is your opinion? Do you enjoy growing and designing with these two? Which is your favorite? #triplewrenfarms #sharebeauty #dahlias #dahlia #dahliatubersale #dahliatubersforsale #cafeaulaitdahlias #cafeaulait

Both Scaur Swinton and Sylvia Craig Hunter bloom with 6”+ flowers, and are classified as formal decorative blooms
Both Scaur Swinton and Sylvia Craig Hunter bloom with 6”+ flowers, and are classified as formal decorative blooms. They both have coral flowers, and both grow around 48” tall. Alongside each other, it’s easy to see that Scaur Swinton (hybridized in 1998 in the U.K.) is on the pink end of the coral family💗, and Sylvia Craig Hunter (hybridized 5 years later in Australia) is on the orange end of the coral color family spectrum🧡. For us, Sylvia Craig Hunter usually grows a little taller than Scaur Swinton, but both throw beautiful stems that are strong and perfect for cutting. Both have a very high petal count, are known for being amazing seed parents, produce plenty of tubers, and are fabulous in the garden and in floral design work thanks to their bloom size. We wouldn’t want to be without either in our flower fields! What other differences/similarities do you see in these two? 💐 #sharebeauty#flowerfarmer#flowerfarm#dahlia#dahliafarm#cutflowergarden#homegardener#pnw#growingdahlias#triplewrenfarms#growdahlias#dahliatubers#dahlias#flowerfarmer#homegardening#tubersale#triplewrenfarms
