What actually is REM — and what does it mean for your baby’s sleep? 🌙 REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. It’s a lighter, more active stage of sleep, and babies move through both REM and non-REM stages across the night. As the night goes on, REM becomes more prominent. That means sleep can be lighter in the second half of the night — and babies may be more easily disturbed. So if they’re too hot, too cold, uncomfortable, or something in their environment changes, that disruption may be more likely to wake them.
