Now you are probably sick and tired of me talking about Cross Purposes. I know I am ha. But I wanted to take a moment and think about where this huge thing came from.  This was the beginning. A simple granny square design I submitted to a magazine. Which was rejected.  But I didn't mind, because I knew I could expand on the submission idea and create something much more than my original idea.  And I am really pleased with what Cross Purposes has become:  a font of granny square and general crochet knowledge. From quick "how to do *that* stitch" videos, to project planning worksheets, simple yarn needs calculators and so much more you can take with you beyond Cross Purposes and my stuff in general. The learning can be applied to any granny square project.  So here you go.  From little things, big things grow.

My next granny square book won't be for you if you don't like texture and layers in your crochet. But if you do, well, I am going to keep you very entertained!  I love creating multi-layered granny squares. It's really fun for me to design and I also love the touchy feely invitation they make in a blanket. Most of the time, I use the most common crochet stitches and techniques. Sure I might tell you to put your hook somewhere you never have before, but it's all still the same basic stitches.  Super fun!  The book I am talking about will be out July 2026, cos I have only just started designing for it and there is a whole heap of work to do to make it happen beyond designing the granny squares.

Thanks so much to all who've decided to start a Cross Purposes adventure!   The first completed project has already been shared over in the Cross Purposes Crew chat and folks are telling me they are learning new tricks too! I have a few special treats included in the Cross Purposes Stitch and Technique video library - I probably should have shared that was part of it all too in the lead up. Little nuggets of video showing tiny things that make a big difference to all your crochet adventures.  There have been a few hiccups for some folks accessing it, mostly because Cross Purposes is hosted on a new platform, not my shop where folks are used to accessing my stuff.  Change is always a bit hard for some while others embrace it. I promise if you take a moment to save the link when you first log in as a favourite, all is very easy. There are many ways to get around once you're on the right site and oh so much there for you to explore beyond the simple granny square pattern that is the basis of Cross Purposes.  I'm excited to see what you make.  Link in my profile to get access to Cross Purposes if you've not joined already!

I've chatted a bit about tangents lately.  How one thing sometimes leads to another.  Well, this is one that never eventuated into anything. And that's ok.  This was back in 2023 when I was designing for Corners and Curves.  I had the idea to include some teeny tiny squares in the collection.  But it never happened for a couple of reasons. One; it was really hard to make them all as teeny as I wanted them to be. So they varied from teeny weeny, to teeny, and to not so teeny.  It's tricky because the fewer rounds you have, the less options there are.  And then when I looked at how many pages the book was going to be with the 45 granny squares I had designed, well. It would have been massive if I kept going down the teeny path.  Does that mean the idea is gone forever? Nope. Maybe one day I will do a teeny granny square collection. The time just wasn't right when I did try.

Cross Purposes is LIVE!  At long last, after much talk and chatter, it's finally here.  If you want the whole Cross Purposes experience, head to the link in my profile to get started.  If you just want one of the Projects and not do the whole CAL thing, you can find the three projects in my shop. (These are all included in the CAL if you are doing it, so no need to purchase as well) So pleased to finally have this out there! I hope you enjoy all the new fun on my new space. The Cross Purposes CAL is hosted on my new learning platform.  That means you don't have to keep an eye out for emails with the next part. There's no huge PDF to download and search through. Its' all there, ready for you from day 1. Think of it as an online course that you can work through every lesson, or skip to the bits you want to absorb. You do the bits you need. No going to other places to watch videos, or download PDFs. It's all right there. Plus, there is the added bonus of the private, no ads, no algorithm deciding what you need to see, community. A place to ask questions, share your plans and progress and connect with others embarking on their own Cross Purposes experiences. It really is a choose your own path experience all in the one place. Yes it may take a little bit to get to know, but I promise, once you give it a go, it's all very easy! I have even created a "Navigating Cross Purposes" module for you if you need it.  Hope you're excited!  It all kicks off tomorrow! You'll get an email if you added your name to the waiting list and if you miss that, I'll pop a link to it in here anyway. And you can start whenever you like too. Cross Purposes is not going away. It will always be there whenever you are ready to dive in.

I am loving following tangents at the moment.  This is the latest tangent I am indulging in with the new collection of granny squares I am designing for next year's book.  I am making wee little flowers, using parts of the granny square patterns and I have so many ideas for using them.  No idea if all my ideas will make it into the book!  Time will tell.   Now imaging all these wee things in bright colours?  Sweet eh?  It'll happen once I have finished the designing for the collection.  Happy to stay all blue for now.

A new thing for the Cross Purposes CAL I have not done before will be some live catch up sessions!  At least three times, I will spend an hour or so online, chatting with folks making along, covering anything that pops up needing clarification, making as we chat and maybe even a weaving in ends session. There's no firm plan for what they'll be.  It will depend on what the folks making want. I've set the dates and times and varied the times so it will mean if you're on the other side of the world to me, it will hopefully be do-able.  And if there's a need, I can do extra sessions after those. Maybe even a show and tell of finished things.  It'll be fun and so good to interact with you more directly!  The Cross Purposes CAL starts May 5.

Some of these things are not like the others... And yet, they 100% belong with this collection.  And yes, they do look similar to many other circles that go square - I have designed a few now.  But they are different and have a completely different purpose to any I have designed before.  Well, that's the idea anyway. I've not tested it yet. But it will be fun!   All these patterns are for my 2026 book.

How much yarn will you need for Cross Purposes?  Well, that depends entirely on you and what you want to make. I will help you work it out as part of the CAL starting 5 May, but, if you know you will be making one of the ready-to-go projects, well, here you go: You can of course use any yarn brand and fibre you like. This is what I used with all the info you need to compare yarns. Giant Granny Square Lap Blanket @BendigoWoollenMills 8 ply cotton, Smoky Blue • 4 balls (770 grams used) • 485 metres per 200 gram ball (2.425 metres per gram ) Hook • 4.5 mm Rainbow Blanket @Bellevue_park_wool 8 ply Wool Hand Dyed Hanks • 238 metres per 100 g skein (2.38 metres per gram) Colours • Galvanised Iron (grey), 8 skeins (790 grams used) • 1 skein each (60 grams of each used approximately) of: ▶ Bottlebrush (red) ▶ Pumpkin (orange) ▶ Canola (yellow) ▶ Sea Green (green) ▶ Bubblegum (blue) ▶ Petrol (indigo) ▶ Jacaranda (violet) Hook • 4.5 mm Scarf @Belevue_park_wool 4 ply Wool Hand Dyed Hanks, Gooseberry Jam • 4 skeins (352 grams used) • 476 metres per 100 gram skein (4.76 metres per gram) Hook • 4 mm I'd love to know what you're planning to make, if you know. Don't stress if you don't know! I've got you. When the CAL starts on the 5th of May.

And just like that, there were thirteen new granny squares. I really leaned into designing before I left for Perth. And I loved it. I added 7 in less than a week ha.  Because I know where this is all going, I am just bursting with ideas to try.  I'm just going to keep on going designing as the inspiration is there when I can. I don't have much luck designing while I am away, as I am so busy and tired at the end of the big days teaching, so it'll have to wait until I get home.  Look I know it's annoying to be teased, but I just can't keep what I do secret until it's ready. I am excited and I am keen to share what's coming - in this case a book due out July 2026!  Hopefully, all my sharing in the year + until its released will be interesting.

And she's off again!  Yup, the suitcases were barely away before I had to pack them up again!  I'm heading to Western Australia today for some workshop fun in Perth and Kalgoorlie!  It's always hard to pack the workshops suitcase, especially when travelling far by plane. And I have so many samples ha.   The workshop kit of yarn, notions, handouts, workshop granny square samples is pretty standard and goes in first. Then it's whatever I can squish in around it. This time, I am taking one of The Cove blankets, Granny Square Academy2 sampler, a sampler blanket from Corners and Curves and whatever else will fit.   It won't surprise you that I have a checklist I print out whenever I go away to teach ha.  P.S. Due to last minute cancellations, there is just 1 spot open in the Sunday Retreat day session. be quick as I think the venue may ban me if I advise many more changes 🤐
