Comment CLOG for our guide to clogs! Does this sound like you? If you’ve ever experienced a plugged duct, you may be surprised to learn that the tender lump in your breast is NOT the plug. It’s the milk backed up behind the plug. This area is often sore or even painful from the inflammation occurring in the area where milk is unable to flow freely. Inflammation creates pressure against the milk ducts, squishing them and making them flat and narrow. The milk is not able to move through that path, backs up and becomes a pain in the boob! To get rid of a plugged duct, use your fingers to gently tap on every part of your breast tissue. Next use your hand to stroke your breast, as softly and gently as you would stroke your baby’s cheek. Start behind the clogged area and stroke up towards your armpit. Don’t forget to give the area under your breast some attention, too. Next, hand express to encourage milk to start flowing. It’s normal as the clog releases for the milk to be stringy and thick or even a clump as the milk behind where the narrowed duct was becomes less inflamed, and milk is freely able to pass through. Keep working it little by little because it took a while to get there and it will take a while to clear. If you are also engorged, before beginning the massage and expression, you may want to move your breasts around. This technique of breast gymnastics, coined by @mayabolman, IBCLC discourages congestion of milk and fluid, gets the fluid and milk ready to move and can bring relief from the pain associated with engorgement and plugged ducts. Don’t underestimate the benefits of rest and relaxation. Take it easy and stay well hydrated as you’re managing the clogged duct. Applying cold compresses for 5-10 minutes every 1-2 hours can help decrease pain and inflammation where the plugged duct is. Sunflower lecithin is a natural fat emulsifier, meaning it helps your milk flow smoothly through the ducts, preventing clogs and inflammation. Save this for future reference! Replying to Katie Ross on TikTok: Side-lying paced feeding gives your baby more control over their feed. It allows for pauses between sucks and swallows for breathing. Slowing down the feeding means they’re more likely to stop eating when they are full rather than be overfed. In the more “classic” cradled bottle-feeding position, baby has no other choice than to swallow when milk is continuously being given from the bottle. More air is often swallowed leading to gassiness, spitting up and uncomfortable tummies. Side lying paced feeding is also comfortable for the parent. Supporting your baby in your lap on their side means no tired arms!
