We have over 3000 Viking Age runestones here in Sweden. New finds are made now and then, and even the smaller ones can be significant. Such as this small piece of a runestone that was found north of Uppsala recently. It measures about 30 x 35 cm (12” x 14”) and was found at Lena Church during maintenance work of a stone wall adjacent to the cemetery. The piece is limestone, which is very rare when it comes to runestones in the region of Uppland. Only one runestone made in limestone has been found in Uppland previously, right by the same church. This has lead to the archeologists believing that the new find is actually a part of the older find. The archaeologists aren’t completely sure about what the runes seen on the piece read. Short clip of the amazing wagon from the Oseberg ship burial dated to the 800s. It is incredible how well the wagon is preserved, even though it is 1200 years old. Two women were buried in the ship, one younger and one old (the older had led a tougher life). Besides the wagon, the grave goods contained 2 oxen, 14 horses, 4 dogs, 4 sleds, 3 beds, kitchen wares and a large amount of textiles. One theory is that the younger woman was a priestess of Freya who was buried with her servant and cult items. The factors supporting this theory are: 1. The wagon has nine (holy number) cats carved in the back. Cats pulled the wagon of Freya. 2. The wagon can not turn. It can only roll straight forward or backward, meaning that it could have been used on a straight, set procession path. 3. The walls of the grave were covered with woven pictures. One of them shows a procession of horse pulled wagons passing a grove where sacrificed men hang from a tree. A woman with a raised sword stands there (the priestess?) 4. A large, fantastic bed rivaling the beauty of the wagon was placed in the center of the burial chamber. This is the famous Kylver rune stone today seen at the History Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Originating from the 400s it pre-dates the Viking Age with almost 400 years. Being 1600 years old, it lacks the artwork seen in later runestones. It served as a lid to a stone grave and the runes were carved om the inside - probably with a magical purpose. It is famous for having the entire Elder Futhark carved into it - runes that were replaced by the Younger Futhark during the Viking Age.
