Babywearing Safety is the most IMPORTANT part of babywearing! And T.I.C.K.S is an excellent guideline to follow: T is for TIGHT Babies should feel secure and be tight against the mum (like a hug). We want babies to move with us, not independently to the wearer. Tight is important as any slack or loose fabric allows baby to slump down which can hinder their breathing and pull on the wearer’s back. Too loose can also be a falls risk. I is for IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES We want to be able to see baby’s face at all times. This allows the wearer to easily monitor their baby, check their breathing and airways and respond to any feeding or distress cues. It also means that babies have good airflow. C is for CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS Aim to have baby high enough so you can easily kiss the top of their head with a slight head tilt forward. If the wearer is extending their neck down, it might be too low. Having them high is also more ergonomic for the wearer. K is for KEEP CHIN OFF CHEST Ensure baby’s chin is up and away from their body. We want to avoid babies being curled as this forces their chin to chest which restricts their airways and ability to breath. It’s important to check regularly especially when babies fall asleep as they are no longer engaging their back muscles and tend to naturally slump more. S is for SUPPORTED BACK Baby’s back should be firmly supported in a natural position with their tummy and chest against you. We always want to carry babies in an upright position.
