Dobermans are so badass! In the 1950s, Macy’s department store in New York City took an unconventional approach to nighttime security by employing Doberman Pinschers to patrol the store after hours. These dogs became a distinctive part of the store’s security team, providing both protection and a sense of order in the massive Herald Square location. With its multiple floors and wide aisles, Macy’s needed a solution that went beyond standard human guards, and the use of well-trained dogs proved to be both effective and innovative for the time. The Dobermans were not only imposing in appearance but also highly disciplined, trained to detect intruders, respond to alarms, and work in tandem with security personnel. They patrolled in pairs or with handlers and quickly became a symbol of vigilance within the store. Their presence deterred unauthorized access and added an extra layer of safety during off-hours, especially in a time when security technology was still limited. Beyond their function, the dogs also fascinated the public. Images of them standing alert among racks of clothing or posing with their handlers captured imaginations and became part of Macy’s lore.
