Have you ever wondered how the Santos-Dumont came to be? Back in 1906 after a triumphant flight, aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier about the difficulty of checking his pocket watch while flying. In response, Cartier created a wristwatch designed for ease of use mid-flight. Creating the first pilot’s watch. Until that point wristwatches were mostly worn by women, however with Alberto being a European celebrity the watch soon became established as a practical accessory for men. In 1911, Cartier collaborated with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos watch. Despite the shift toward round watches during WWII, the Santos endured as a Cartier signature piece. Today, the Cartier Santos remains a timeless classic. Though it no longer flies the skies, it holds an unshakable place in history as the first pilot’s watch. #barkandjack #cartier
