Sometimes the best way to pull yourself higher is to spend a little time trying not to come down. Here I’m using supramaximal pull-up holds with slow eccentrics to build sheer pulling power and explosiveness. The goal isn’t simply more pull-ups. It’s producing enough force, fast enough, to rise above the bar with the power and fluidity needed for cleaner muscle-ups. The heavy hold teaches my body to own the top position. The slow descent overloads my grip, arms, lats and upper back while building the strength to control every inch instead of dropping like a sack of wet concrete. For advanced calisthenics athletes, these can be loaded beyond normal pulling capacity to help develop greater force and confidence above the bar. For novices, assisted holds and controlled negatives can build the foundational strength needed to earn the first pull-up. Same tool. Different dosage.
