On the 8th of May 1945, Britain and its allies marked a moment that would go down in history; Victory in Europe Day. After nearly six relentless years of war, the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender signalled the end of World War II in Europe. The news broke on radios across the UK, and within hours, people were pouring into the streets. In towns, cities and small villages, flags flew from windows, bunting was draped across buildings, and strangers embraced in celebration. In London, more than a million people gathered in Trafalgar Square and outside Buckingham Palace, cheering as Winston Churchill and the Royal Family appeared on the balcony. A young Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret even slipped out anonymously to join the crowds. Celebrations came with a heavy heart, as the war in the Pacific was still raging, and countless families were mourning lost loved ones. VE Day was both a celebration and a solemn moment of reflection, a reminder of the cost of peace. Today, we remember those who fought, served, and sacrificed.
