The Surfrider Foundation is deeply alarmed by the Trump administration’s recent actions to weaken marine national monuments. This includes our strong opposition to opening monuments to industrial activities like oil and gas development and overfishing. Our national monuments were created by Presidents from both major political parties to protect extraordinary and unparalleled public lands and waters. Protection of monuments provides public use and enjoyment within and outside of monument boundaries, especially for recreational purposes. Finally, monuments provide continued economic benefits to local states, tribes, and communities through tourism, recreation, and sustainable fisheries. The Surfrider Foundation calls on the Trump administration and Congress to protect our national monuments and other federal conservation areas from weakened regulations and reduced funding.
