Wildflowers are in bloom, and so are poisonous plants. Did you know poison ivy grows flowers in the spring? After losing their leaves during the winter, these deciduous plants regrow red leaves. In late spring and early summer, they bud small yellow-green flowers that bloom in clusters close to the vine. Later in the summer, the leaves turn green and flowers are eventually replaced by small berries. Remember: poison ivy, oak and sumac are toxic in every season! They always contain urushiol, the allergen that causes a rash. Because these poisonous plants are always changing colors and presenting themselves differently, it’s important to know how to identify them in any season. The best way to avoid a run-in with a poisonous plant is to stay on-trail and follow the #LeaveNoTrace principles. If you do encounter poison ivy, oak or sumac, be sure to use a technical wash to remove urushiol from your skin and clothes. We trust Tecnu for all of our poisonous plant needs.
