Our manufacturing partners in India reached out to us a year ago about a project they had been developing in northern India, in a city nearing the border of Nepal that specializes in world class silk. What they had discovered was a knitter who was producing incredible cashmere that was made of yarns from Mongolian goats; these yarns are typically used for pashmina scarves, but we began experimenting with using them to produce patterns that show up often in our collection: herringbones and plaids. What’s really special about these yarns is that they are not dyed; all the colors are naturally derived from the goats they’re harvested from and painstakingly separated out to create the colors and patterns you see here. We employed a dark greyish-umber yarn to create a herringbone pattern that shows up on our shop jacket pattern. The silhouette and detailing will feel familiar, but we guarantee that you have never felt a shop jacket quite like this one before. The fabric is airy, light and incredibly soft to the touch. It functions more like a knit than anything else with its lofty hand. The Crosscut Flannel, arguably our flagship garment outside of our denim, also received the same treatment with a check pattern made out of two naturally-derived yarn colors. All the details you know and love from our Crosscuts are present: metal enamel-coated buttons, asymmetrical pocket flaps, and our signature crossed back yoke. The difference is, of course, the fabric. Woven on looms that typically produce the city’s world-reknowned Tussar silk, this cashmere plaid is unlike anything we’ve made before. These two garments were meant to push the boundaries of what’s possible and we hope that they, in some small way, help recontextualize two classic styles that we’ve been making for a very long time. Because they are best experienced in person, both the Cashmere Shop Jacket and Cashmere Crosscut are limited to in-store purchases via our NY and LA flagship stores in limited quantities. We encourage you to stop by and experience them firsthand. 📷: @feelslikedan
