400R Sold for $995,000 all in last at RM’s Monterey Auction. The price does seem a bit low for the car but still shows some progress of the receptiveness of Japanese cars at auction. The car wasn’t our car but here’s my take on it… It’s still early in the lifecycle of Japanese cars as long-term collectibles. While their cultural impact and performance heritage are now widely recognized, the core group that grew up idolizing them through video games, movies, and racing isn’t yet as a whole at the stage in life where they can comfortably afford to buy and keep these cars. This mirrors what happened decades ago with European and American classics, which only reached their peak at auctions like Pebble Beach once the enthusiasts who loved them in their youth became established collectors. As time goes on and this generation builds more disposable income, it’s likely that iconic Japanese models will rise in prominence on the same stage, joining the traditional marques as blue-chip collectibles. Selling a Japanese collectible car at a venue like Pebble Beach today can be challenging because the buyer demographic has historically leaned toward an older generation of collectors who grew up with European marques like Ferrari, Porsche, or Jaguar, and American icons like Duesenberg or Shelby. These collectors often have strong emotional connections to the cars of their own youth and view them as benchmarks of craftsmanship, status, and history. Japanese performance cars like Skylines, Supras, RX-7s, NSXs tend to resonate more with a younger audience who experienced them through 1990s car culture, tuning magazines, and video games. Many of these enthusiasts aren’t yet at the financial stage to participate in high-dollar auctions, so the demand at Pebble Beach is still relatively thin. Over time as that generation accumulates wealth, I would expect to see these cars gain traction in the same auction spaces. #jdm #gtr #r33 #nismo #400r #carweek #pebblebeach #concoursdelegance #r34 #collectorcars s
