Let’s talk about sports. Or rather—let’s talk about what sports are revealing about us as a country right now. Because when we talk about trans athletes, we’re not really talking about fairness, are we? We’re talking about values. We’re talking about a nation that would rather deny someone their personhood than figure out how to let them play a game. And yes, play. Not wage war. Not pass laws. Play. What does it say about us when we treat play like sacred ground but treat actual human beings like threats? The truth is, trans participation in sports is not the crisis it’s made out to be. Trans athletes make up a tiny fraction of participants. And even if the numbers were higher, can we not rise to the occasion of finding solutions? We’ve done it before. Women weren’t always allowed to compete. Black athletes weren’t always allowed to compete. We’ve expanded the field before, surely we can do it again. So the question isn’t can we adapt. It’s why don’t we want to? What is it that makes us so scared to expand the definition of who gets to belong? Who gets to win? Who gets to be seen? At what point did inclusion become the threat? And exclusion the norm we protect? This Pride Month, we’re not just celebrating trans joy—we’re defending trans humanity. Because no one should have to earn their right to exist. And if the idea of a trans kid playing on a team feels threatening to the foundation of your beliefs… maybe it’s time to examine the foundation. 🌈
