So @xppenusa sent me their stand-alone Magic Drawing Pad tablet for review ✨ The tablet came packaged really well and it included basically everything you need: You get the tablet, the stylus, a padded drawing glove and a protective case. The tablet is the perfect portable size at 12.2” and it’s surprisingly lightweight. I never felt burdened when carrying it around at home and I’m confident it will travel easily. The battery life is really impressive, allowing for 8-12 hours of drawing, and the pen does not need charging at all. The matte screen is a pleasure to draw on without needing an additional screen protector and it hardly shows finger smudges. The display operates extremely well in bright light with hardly any glare, so it works very well outdoors in sunlight. I also got the Smart Keyboard which I really like. The tablet docks into a slot and can open and close like a laptop & it’s easily set aside for tablet mode. But there is no track pad swipe/scroll gesture support with the OS, which can be frustrating when browsing. Aside from art apps the tablet can be a general use device, but it’s fixed on Android 12 which is not the best version for tablet mode/keyboard support, so you have to temper your expectations for general functionality. Settings are also limited. Being an iOS user it took time to adjust to Android, but I eventually found a decent level of comfort with it. It can download and run all Android-based apps, so many common apps, games and services are easily utilized. Clip Studio, Krita, Infinite Painter (similar to Procreate) and many other art apps are available. Overall I feel the Magic Drawing Pad is a lot of bang for your buck and a great budget alternative to iPad. The drawing apps work wonderfully and the rest of the software is functional if a bit rough around the edges. The matte anti-glare display, pen sensitivity, long battery life and light weight, as well as top-notch art apps, make it a great choice for an art device, I only hope XPPen upgrades the OS in the future so it can really shine in all aspects.
