Femi, ‘Black Fae Day means more to me than I can say – I’ve loved the fantasy genre since I was a child, but it was a genre that excluded Black people for some time. So being able to partake in a revision of the genre, where people can celebrate their Blackness and their love of all things fantasy, together. The tights were so fun to style! When I saw the gold pattern, it instantly made me picture a fighter who had strength but also great elegance. So I sought to create a look that had a certain grace to it, but also would be easy to manoeuvre in and looked like a character that wasn’t to be messed with. The blouse felt like an instant match, and I loved the silhouette. I then added an ankara sash on top of leather shorts and a smidge of face paint to accentuate the look.’ Fola Oriola, ‘Black Fae Day means a lot to me. It’s a beautiful celebration of Black joy, imagination, and fantasy. We as black people can unapologetically embrace magical aesthetics and see ourselves reflected in whimsical spaces where we’ve often been left out.
