What makes a house a home? Walls and windows? Or the invisible threads of memory woven through everyday life? In Walk the House at Tate Modern, Do Ho Suh transforms fine, translucent textiles into impossible architectures of belonging. Pastel polyester stairwells, kitchens and corridors dissolve into one another, merging his homes in Seoul, New York, London, and Berlin. Each overlooked detail – a light switch, a door handle, a fire extinguisher – is recreated with exquisite precision, raising the ordinary to the extraordinary. Suh draws on the Korean tradition of bojagi, stitching together fragments of lived experience into fragile, glowing structures. His fabric architectures are at once ghostly and intimate, inviting us to walk not only through buildings, but through memory itself. Home, he reminds us, is not fixed. It can be folded, carried, and reassembled; it lives in our bodies as much as in our walls. His work captures the in-between spaces – the thresholds where belonging, absence and memory meet – and renders them in cloth.
