The British countryside comes alive in Mark Hearld’s hands: foxes slink through brambles, birds peck among sharp-etched branches, and porcupines bristle with playful menace. Drawing on the unruly spirit of Grimms’ fairy tales, Hearld’s work crackles with life. His prints and paper-cuts are bold, imperfect, and unapologetically hand-wrought. “The opposite of polite,” he calls them: “strong, bold, and full of life.” Hearld’s most recent collaboration sees his vibrant paper-cut patterns take on new movement, leaping onto textiles for Zanini and ARTS & SCIENCE's Autumn/Winter 2024 collection. Working with Japanese artisans in Kyoto, each piece was hand-printed in rich indigo, the deep blues amplifying the “lyrical, unexpected movement” that Hearld loves. A keen student of British mid-century greats like Enid Marx and Peggy Angus (whose work is also featured on the wrapper for the issue in which he features), Hearld channels their spirit into something wholly his own in a celebration of the wild, the lyrical, and the universal rhythms of nature that speak to us all. Look out for the third edition of his book Raucous Invention, coming this June, and a feature on Mark Hearld in Issue 124, Rural. @mark_hearld @zaninicollection @arts_and_science #SelvedgeMagazine #MarkHearld #HandPrinted #Artisans #RepeatDesign #RepeatPattern #PrintDesign #TextilePrinting #PaperPrinting #PaperCutouts #PaperCuts #ArtsandScience #RaucousInvention #HandmadeStories #BritishCraft #IndigoDreams #NatureInspires #Zanini #DesignBooks #ArtBooks #ArtisanMakers #BlockPrinted Image Credits: 1/ Mark Hearld by @aluncallenderphoto 2/ Mark Herald x ZANNI with ARTS & SCIENCE back-gather dress, block-printed, ZA collection 2024.
