Sometimes the best adventures start with uncertainty and a bit of courage. Story by @ivanpkhc: In December 2023, I traveled to Hong Kong with the idea of capturing a night climbing shot at the crags above the skyscrapers, lit by my headlamp. I love photos that capture adventure in extreme nature, especially ones that feel unique. Night shots take that sense of adventure to another level. While most people are asleep, the world feels different. At first, I had no idea how to make it happen. I didn’t know the climbing areas, had no climbing partners, and only had personal gear. But I knew this shot would be rare - climbing next to skyscrapers is something few places offer. My first try was posting in the Hong Kong Climbing Facebook group, but I got no responses. Next, I tried the local climbing gyms, but the day pass cost 280 HKD ($36 USD). Finally, I showed up at a crag and hoped to meet climbers. After a sweaty, sketchy approach with ropes, scrambling, and metal rungs, I met three local, Connor, Ronny, and Emma, who kindly let me join them. A week and a half later, we returned at night. I found a bolt halfway up the wall, perfect for clipping in and hanging to capture the shot. This shot is one of my favorites, not only because it’s unique but also because of the persistence behind it.
