I struggled to find a tool that could create the popular ribbed fondant effect on larger, tall cakes, so I decided to make my own! After plenty of trial and error, I found a simple and effective solution and I’m excited to share it with you. What You’ll Need: • Bamboo skewers • Chipboard • Double-sided tape • Fondant How to Make the Tool: 1. Cut a 6x12” piece of chipboard. 2. Apply double-sided tape horizontally across the board. 3. Place bamboo skewers perpendicular to the tape, spacing them about 1/4” apart. 4. Press them down firmly to secure them in place. And just like that, your custom ribbed fondant tool is ready to use! How to Use It: 1. Roll out your fondant evenly. 2. Press the tool into the fondant, applying equal pressure. 3. Carefully lift it off to reveal a beautifully textured pattern. Note: I found it easier to work with smaller fondant panels (no bigger than the tool itself), cutting them to size with a pastry or pizza cutter for clean, precise edges. When applying them to the cake, I carefully aligned each panel to ensure a seamless finish. Tips: • If your fondant sticks to the skewers, dust them with powdered sugar for an easy release. • Avoid pressing the tool too deeply into the fondant, as this can cause tearing or create thin spots. I recommend testing on a scrap piece first to find the ideal depth for your design. • You can space the skewers as close or far apart as you’d like. I found that 1/4” spacing worked well for my design, but feel free to experiment! This DIY method gave me the flexibility I needed, and I hope it helps you too!
