Details Matter: The Hightower - Millimeters Matter • We are now in our 10th year, and 4th revision, of the extremely versatile and popular Hightower model. Our newest version has quite a few design changes compared to its predecessor, but suspension is where we made the most dramatic advances. It might look similar to those that came before it, but in a game where millimeters matter this is really a substantial change. The lower link is now tightly packaged lower and more forward against the BB compared to the previous generation to get the improved kinematic characteristics that we were after. Moving any of these pivot points a couple millimeters in any direction makes wild adjustments to the ride quality. Moving all of them at once requires a lot of care, and getting all these bits to produce the suspension kinematic we’re after, without clearance issues, and do it with pivot and linkage hardware that meets the durability and serviceability standards we hold ourselves to is a very tall task. What do all these combined small amounts of movement change? The main benefit is significantly reduced anti-squat resulting in more desirable pedal platform, and better traction. Remember, anti-squat isn’t bad. Not enough anti-squat and you have a bike that bobs under power. Too much and the bike will be harsh and not as able to absorb bumps while under power. Moving those millimeters and finding that ’sweet spot’ is what helps give the Hightower it’s core suspension traits: - Minimal kickback on square-edge hits - Remains active while pedaling up and across rough, technical terrain - More sensitivity with a plushness off the top, and fluttery small bump performance. - A leverage rate that provides predictable, consistent, progressive support. Those millimeters of change become very noticeable in the Hightowers overall suspension performance. It’s much more confident, there’s much more traction on offer, and it makes for a very composed descender. The perfect all-around, mid-travel, trail-bike. Any questions not covered here?
