Dhamakhali, North 24 Parganas, Sundarbans: A Dialogue Ecological Research in West Bengal The Sundarbans (21°30′–22°40′ N, 89°02′–90° 00′ E), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the world’s largest mangrove delta and an essential part of Bengal’s ecology. During our research in North 24 Parganas, Sundarbans, we witnessed how the delta actively shapes both biodiversity and daily life. Travelling by boat between villages, we encountered local varieties of bananas and mangoes, as well as edible flowers such as lilies and hibiscus, and medicinal greens and herbs that reflect a deep connection between people and the landscape. Each village—often a small island—carries a distinct ecological identity, marked by its unique plant communities and cultivation practices. In a terrain continually reshaped by tides and sediment, evolution remains an ongoing process rather than a finished story. Our research in the Sundarbans continues as an unfolding dialogue, revealing layered ecologies, cultural knowledge, and survival strategies within this living delta.
