The Sicilian Triskelion, seen here on a marble tombstone in Natchez City, was first adopted as the symbol of the region in 1282. It is featured on Sicily’s current flag. The symbol centers the head of Medusa, a mythological figure with snakes for hair known to help fight the forces of evil. She is given ears of wheat symbolizing the land’s fertility. Finally, each of three legs refer to the three masses of land that comprise Sicily.
