Since there was a lot of confusion about our new lens BLUESYNC, I made a video explaining how it works, and the science and principles on which it is based. You can watch the full hour long video at raoptics.com/bluesync-vid. In this case, many of the “biohackers“ have developed this notion that sunlight is always good for us, and then more is always better. We can understand that this is not true simply by the fact that an overdose on sunlight leads to the clear harmful side effect of a sunburn. Some have even gone as far as attempting to say that sunburns are not bad for us. Unfortunately, I was under the spell of this pseudoscientific information, and I even shared it widely. After working with the world’s leading expert in holistic photobiology and applied phototherapy, Dr. Alexander Wunsch of Germany, I slowly learned that my old perspectives were simply wrong. One of the most interesting concepts he presented to me is that even the spectrum of natural sunlight is vastly different depending on the environment in which we find ourselves. Not only do atmospheric conditions alter sunlight, but so does the physical environment around us—and very significantly so. The environment in which we evolved for millions of years most recently as primates was the canopy of trees, bathing in chlorophyll-altered sunlight, which naturally shifts the balance of the spectrum from more deleterious short-wavelength light to beneficial longer wavelength light, specifically deep red and near-infrared. BlueSync works on this natural principle; as is legally required for protective eyewear, it eliminates UVA/UVB completely—but unlike traditional sunglasses (which BlueSync is not) it also eliminates the totally overlooked range of high energy visible light (HEVL), which regular sunglasses actually cause us to get more of by darkening the overall spectrum, causing our pupil to open wider and allow in more of this light which induces the production of excess reactive oxygen species molecules (ROS).
