If BMW hadn’t screwed the pooch, then according to my calculations, the G80 would have been a high-revving, ITB-powered V10 M3. Let’s look at the progression: • E30 M3 (S14B23): 2.3L high-revving inline-4 with individual throttle bodies (ITBs)—a true motorsport-derived engine, revving to ~7,300 RPM. • E36 M3 (S50B30/S50B32 in Europe): 3.0L and later 3.2L high-revving inline-6 with ITBs in the Euro models (U.S. models got the non-ITB S50/S52). Revved to ~7,600–8,000 RPM in Euro spec. • E46 M3 (S54B32): 3.2L high-revving inline-6 with ITBs—widely regarded as one of BMW’s finest engines, revving to 8,000 RPM. • E92 M3 (S65B40): 4.0L high-revving V8 with ITBs—a race-inspired engine derived from the F1-era V10 (S85) architecture, revving to 8,400 RPM. • F80 M3 (S55B30): 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6—efficient and fast but lacks the soul, linear powerband, and sound of its predecessors. No ITBs, revs to 7,600 RPM. • G80 M3 (S58B30): 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6—an improved version of the S55 with better response, sound, and strength, but still turbocharged and without ITBs. Revs to 7,200 RPM. If only they had continued the progression…
