Nylon is a notoriously difficult fabric to overdye. That is exactly why we could barely believe our eyes the first time we saw such a uniform and deep hue of blue featured on this MA-1 Flight Jacket during exhibition season from SDA. But the hues don’t lie, and we are equally surprised by the full production lot delivering with the same uniformity and precision as the first sample. The Studio D’Artisan Indigo MA-1 Flight Jacket is a reinterpretation of a classic military silhouette with a unique Japanese twist. Constructed from 100% nylon, the fabric is coated with indigo pigment, resulting in a distinctive texture and character. Unlike conventional nylon, which tends to have a uniform surface, the indigo coating introduces irregular fading and a rich patina over time. Developed for US Air Force pilots in the early 1950s, the new MA-1 design spec featured several changes to its predecessor - the L-2 model, as air combat moved into the Jet age. Taking into account the tightness of the cockpit as well as the plethora of instruments that surrounded the pilot, the shortened hem length and trim design sought to improve comfort in flight while features such as the utility pocket featured on the left sleeve were added to reduce any unnecessary protrusions from the jacket. Loved by mil-spec fans around the world, Studio D’Artisan have maintained all the bells and whistles of the MA-1 jacket and elevated a classic military garment by giving it the indigo treatment. Extremely easy to wear, the luxury does not end with the outer shell. Each jacket is rayon lined in order to maximize comfortability for the wearer. The Studio D’Artisan Indigo MA-1 Flight Jacket is now available on the dot com.
