The 1st Marine Division participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Korean War. The initial battle lasted from 11-15 August 1952 and began with fire from four M46 and four M4A3E8 tanks. The 1st Marines then mounted their assault, reaching the crest by 22:30, and began driving the enemy force down the slope. Enemy mortars harassed the Marines at the crest as the enemy mounted a counterattack and attempted to take back the hill on the 13th. The 1st Marines fought back hard, keeping the enemy forces at bay, and continued to reinforce their positions through the 14th as they remained under mortar fire. The successive Marine companies that took over Bunker Hill had to repel 7 additional attacks before the end of August, but ultimately ended with the hill in Marine hands.
